Repertoire

Tom Higgins with cast and chorus at Bohemian Girl rehearsals January 2008
The repertoire is largely selected from operas that are lesser known in the UK but probably still performed elsewhere.
The Directors
The Artistic Directing Staff are all fully professional — although, backstage, volunteers help with scenery and properties and in other ways.
Auditions
Opera South holds auditions at the National Opera Studio three or four times annually. Generally speaking, the Company seeks to engage singers who are aged between 23 and 32 years; however where a singer has entered the profession later in life, exceptions occur. Advanced students and postgraduate singers are encouraged to apply for audition. Students are frequently chosen to cover a major role, take part in the chorus, or sing at fund-raising events.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult to find opportunities like this
where young singers can perform major roles with full orchestra.”
— Philip Langridge, CBE |
Successful singers are offered a fee commensurate with the role they are to sing and their previous experience. Accommodation and food is also provided and travelling expenses from the London area are paid, unless they form part of an inclusive fee.
Apart from student singers, the chorus comprises experienced local singers of all ages who are professionally trained. This chorus is sufficiently large and, together with the orchestra, offers a worthwhile training experience in preparation for young aspiring soloists to progress to major opera companies.
