For this production of Martha by Friedrich von Flotow, Opera South co-produced the opera with Northampton Festival Opera. Tom Hawkes, who produced The Bohemian Girl in February 2008 to much acclaim, returned for the production; as he was also producing Martha for Northampton Festival Opera, he suggested this combined production. Martha was staged in January in Northampton and in February in Haslemere. The soloists and production team were shared, but each company used its own chorus and orchestra. Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera House combine in a similar way, so the partners were in good company!

Claire Surman Claire Surman has sung principal roles for a number of companies including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Clonter Opera, Opera Box, Surrey Opera and Riverside Opera. Last summer she covered the role of Tatiana Eugene Onegin at Glyndebourne and recently sang Gilda Rigoletto for Kentish Opera.

Stephanie Lewis Stephanie Lewis has been studying at the Royal College of Music. She was a member of the 2007 Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and her roles include Ottavia L’incoronazione di Poppea, Baba the Turk The Rake’s Progress, Irene in Handel’s Atalanta and The Dog in The Cunning Little Vixen

Tom Raskin Tom Raskin has sung roles for many UK companies including Glyndebourne, Surrey Opera, Opera Restor’d, Streetwise Opera and Opera Holland Park. He sang the role of Count Almaviva in the 2000 NFO production of The Barber of Seville.

Anthony Cleverton Anthony Cleverton has sung and covered principal roles with Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Glyndebourne on Tour, English Touring Opera, Garsington Opera, Mid Wales Opera, Clonter Opera and British Youth Opera.

Dominic Barrand Dominic Barrand has has sung roles for Opera South, Opera Holland Park, The Aldeburgh Festival, Northern Opera, Opera UK, Kentish Opera and First Act Opera. Future roles include Scarpia Tosca for Pavilion Opera.

Michael Davis Michael Davis has a 1st class degree in Music from Oxford University where he began his vocal studies after which he studied at the Royal College of Music. Roles he has sung include Father Hansel and Gretel, Simone L Finta Semplice and Sam Trouble in Tahiti.
